Gruha Jyoti Scheme: The Karnataka government launched the 'Gruha Jyoti Scheme' to provide free electricity to households consuming less than 200 units per month on average. This scheme aims to reduce the electricity costs of citizens and improve their living standards.

Eligibility Criteria

Only residents of Karnataka are eligible. Both house owners and tenants can apply. Non-residents living in the state can also avail of the benefits. The Aadhaar card must be linked to the electricity account.

Calculation of Average Consumption

The average monthly consumption in 2022-23 plus 10% increase will be the free units. If monthly use is below this average, the bill will be zero. If it exceeds the average but is less than 200 units, only the additional units will be charged.

Scenario Free Units
Average use: 150 units + 10% = 165 units 165 units
Monthly use: 175 units Pay for 175 - 165 = 10 units

For new connections, 58-59 free units will be given every month in the first year.

How to Apply

Applications can be submitted on the Seva Sindhu portal or at Bangalore One centers. Required documents are Aadhaar card, electricity bill, consumer ID.


Saves up to ₹1000 per month on electricity bills. Benefits all residents of Karnataka irrespective of caste or tenure status. Over 8 lakh applications received as of June 2023.
